The Story
Sixty years ago this was a cypress forest. Then the MRGO shipping channel let saltwater into the freshwater swamp, the trees died where they stood, and the forest became open marsh studded with gray ghost stumps. That history is why the view from the boat is so strange and so good: wild wetland in every direction, and downtown New Orleans floating on the horizon behind it. The community coalition at Restore the Bayou Bienvenue Wetlands Triangle tells the full story, and Lower Ninth Ward neighbors at the Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development have led the push to bring the cypress back, alongside the state's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.
The Wildlife
The marsh edge is a wildlife highway: brown pelicans skimming the water, great blue herons frozen in the grass, turtles stacked on logs, and from April through October, wild American alligators. Nothing out here is baited or staged; Louisiana law prohibits feeding gators and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries manages the population statewide, roughly two million strong. Some cruises see a dozen, some see two. That's what wild means, and it's why a sighting from the rail still gets the whole boat pointing.

Good to Know
The bayou party boats run Bayou Bienvenue, a protected marsh waterway on the east edge of New Orleans, about 20 minutes from the French Quarter. It's calm water with wild alligators, herons, pelicans, and a skyline view.
Completely wild and never fed. Feeding alligators is illegal in Louisiana, so sightings vary by day and season, with warm months (April through October) the most active.
The Mississippi through New Orleans is a heavy commercial shipping channel: big wakes, industrial banks, no wildlife. Bayou Bienvenue is protected water where the boat can actually stop, float, and let the party happen.
